Anybody that runs a blog knows what a PITA comment spam can be.  Even smaller blogs like mine routinely receive comment spam, its an unavoidable fact of blogging life.  Any tool that can help combat the spam plague is a welcome addition in my book.  But how should I feel about solutions that aren’t marketed as standards but as proprietary formats?

How I ultimately feel about Typepad AntSpam ultimately depends on whether Typepad allows non MT based products to access it via API or other method.  Akismet has worked well so far, but I am always willing to look for alternate or additional methods of combating the plague known as comment spam.  I hope that 6A considers opening up the standard to everyone if it’s successful.  They well might given it would be a chance to provide a consistant anti-spam standard.  Then again, they may not if they take any ques from Apple.

No worries, Darrin—TypePad AntiSpam is 100% free and it’s open source, so not only can anybody use it, but you could take the code and make your own antispam service too, if you wanted. Plus, it supports the Akismet API, so it works with lots of platforms; Our plugins support Movable Type and WordPress and of course it’s built in to TypePad, but there’s already talk of updating the Expression Engine plugin for Akismet to point to TypePad AntiSpam, so nobody has to pay for blocking blog spam. Sounds like we’re on exactly the path you are advocating.

Hi Anil, thanks for the update and service clarification.  I’m pleased (and honestly relieved) to see leaders in the personal publishing industry find and pursue innovative and platform-independent solutions to combat blog spam.  While such spam is a minor annoyance to blogs like mine, I can’t imagine the amount of work that would be necessary to maintain a high-traffic blog without the availability of such tools.  The effort is appreciated (at least by me smile )
