Ubuntu 7.10

I finally took the dive into Ubuntu by installing version 7.10 Desktop at work.  After forcing the install to use basic 16-color VGA for it’s install routine, everything installed properly.  Although the Flash installer wouldn’t install properly using the plugin loading screen, I am still amazed at how fast the OS seems to be.  Everything from terminal windows to Firefox and even the Evolution mail client accessing my work Exchange server seems lightening fast. The Ubuntu distribution even includes an MS friendly Remote Desktop application, something that makes it more useful in my line of work.

This is the first product I have used that seems stable enough to give to temperamental computer users, Microsoft (and Apple) should be worried about what it will do in enabling the low end hardware market.  Both Vista and Leopard require better hardware for seemingly similar performance.  And they cost money.
